Build the theoretical knowledge, practical scanning skills and clinical experience required for cardiac sonography through a comprehensive 50-week, in-person diploma program featuring hands-on cardiac scan laboratories and 18 weeks of supervised clinical practicum.
The Canadian Ultrasound Institute’s Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography Diploma provides students with comprehensive education in cardiac anatomy, physiology, pathology, and ultrasound imaging principles. Through classroom instruction, hands-on cardiac scan laboratories and supervised clinical experience, students develop the technical skills required to acquire diagnostic-quality cardiac ultrasound images. The program emphasizes echocardiography and the assessment of the heart and great vessels while promoting safe, ethical and patient-centred care.
*Cohort enrolment is limited to a minimum of five and a maximum of ten students while the program’s accreditation is pending.
The curriculum combines theoretical education, practical scan-laboratory training and supervised clinical experience. Students develop knowledge and skills in the following areas:
Students complete 18 weeks of supervised clinical practicum at an assigned clinical setting. The practicum provides opportunities to apply classroom and scan-laboratory learning under appropriate supervision.

This program has applied for accreditation through Accreditation Canada’s EQual™ program, and the process is currently underway. The program holds “Admitted” status.
“An educational program has applied for accreditation, and accreditation processes are underway. The admitted status will expire 3 years from the date of program acceptance, unless otherwise indicated. Students are advised to monitor the accreditation status of an admitted status program to ensure that accredited status has been achieved at the time of their graduation. Students enrolled in an educational program that has not been accredited at the time of graduation may not be eligible for further credentialing/certification/registration as required by their professional and/or regulatory authorities.”
Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography (Pending Accreditation) is approved as a vocational program under the Ontario Career Colleges Act, 2005. The approval is subject to conditions established by the Superintendent of Career Colleges.
Sonography is a regulated profession in Ontario. Individuals wishing to practise as cardiac sonographers must satisfy applicable certification and registration requirements.
Completion of this program does not by itself guarantee eligibility for Sonography Canada certification examinations or registration with the College of Medical Radiation and Imaging Technologists of Ontario (CMRITO). Eligibility depends on the program’s accreditation status and the requirements in effect at graduation.
Cardiac sonographers use specialized ultrasound equipment to produce images of the heart and great vessels, supporting physicians in assessing and monitoring cardiovascular conditions.
